December in D.C.

To add a little holiday cheer to my weekend, I went to the U.S. Botanic Garden holiday exhibit with some friends today. They have a really cool train display and also a model of the National Mall, complete with buildings and monuments made of natural materials (sticks, leaves, shells, etc.). The buildings were really detailed and beautiful.

Afterward, we wanted to stop at the holiday market by the National Portrait Gallery but after driving around searching for parking for about 20 minutes, we gave up and headed home. But we did stop at a Dunkin' Donuts (which are a bit few and far between) for some white hot chocolate. I swear that's just a cupful of heated sugar, but it's delicious.

Journalism and the holidays party
Friday after work I went to the first after-hours party at the Newseum. If you don't know what the Newseum is, check it out. And visit next time you're in D.C. It's one of the museums that charge for admittance, but I think it's worth it. I'm obviously biased since I'm a journalist, but my parents loved it, too.

Anyway, the event was a holiday party put on by Brightest Young Things. It had a lot of potential, but didn't quite live up to the possibilities. Mostly, it was just really crowded with HUGE drink lines. (Plus, you had to stand in line to buy fake money and then stand in line to get a drink with the fake money — no real money accepted at the bar line.)  Needless to say, I didn't drink much. But I did check out some Newseum exhibits, the amazing view of the National Mall from the terrace, a "silent disco" and a bar in an elevator.
