We're almost halfway through the season at the Muny (the outdoor theater in St. Louis). My thoughts on the first three performances:
1) Oklahoma: I really enjoyed this show. The one part that was a bit drawn out was the dream sequence. It was a lot of dancing (which I usually love), but it just wasn't very exciting. And it went on and on. Other than that, the show was great.
2) Grease: I hate to say this was my least favorite thus far. The movie is one of my favorites, and I think that makes it hard to enjoy the musical, which has some differences. This is the second time I had seen the musical (the first was at the Fox Theatre years ago), and both times I've been less impressed with it than I thought I would be. The music was great, and the show was done well. But the storyline and show just doesn't cut it.
3) Hello Dolly: This has been my favorite of the season so far. I had seen the movie, but I had never seen the show in person. The actresses who played Dolly and Millie did an especially good job. And the numbers with the whole company were great.

I saw Grease at the Fox years ago also, and I was similarly unimpressed. I think it has something to do with the lack of John Travolta. And maybe that they cleaned it up a bit for the kids.
My favorite Muny shows in recent years have been Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Miss Saigon. Also, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was fairly entertaining, what with all the dancing.
The Muny is doing Joseph again in August. And I think my favorite production I saw there was Aida last summer.
