From the moment I knew I'd be moving to D.C. this spring, people have been hounding me: "Make sure you go to the Cherry Blossom Festival." Well, everyone can relax, because I went.
The peak bloom time is actually later this week, but I'm on duty for work next weekend, so not sure I'm going to make it then. It was pretty amazing today, though. It started out cloudy, but made it to around 70 degrees with sun.
I walked all the way around the Tidal Basin, plus took detours to the WWII Memorial, FDR Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and Cherry Blossom Lantern Lighting Ceremony. The most difficult part was making sure I didn't walk into other people's photos. That might have been the most people taking the most photos I've ever seen at once.
I also learned why the locals groan about tourists. As I was getting on the Metro to return home this evening, I almost got crushed in a crowd on a Metro escalator. The dear tourists had taken the escalator down to the platform, but then stopped right at the bottom of the escalator. And because there were LOTS of tourists around, the crowd was so big that they couldn't just move out of the way. By the time I arrived at the bottom of the escalator, people were already backed up onto the escalator. (For those not imagining the situation ... it's hard to stop on an escalator since they keep moving.) Luckily, the Metro arrived about that time (and they all crammed onto it). I just waited for the next train.
