Last weekend, my friend Tom, whom I met during our Dow Jones copy editing internship boot camp in 2005, visited. We had a mini-reunion with three other Dow Jones interns from our group who are now living in D.C. (That's a lot of copy editors in one place at one time.)
Friday night, a few of us met up for happy hour on U Street after Tom arrived.
On Saturday, we had brunch and then went to the National Zoo. The weather looked fine ... until we got there. After we entered the zoo, we saw the first exhibit (prairie dogs), and then it started raining. We spent a little time hopping between indoor zoo buildings, but we eventually ended up at Zoo Bar across the street for a beer. That night, we met up with a group at the Big Hunt bar in Dupont Circle. We took a few group pictures of the Dow Jones group.
The next day we had a fantastic brunch buffet with endless mimosas at the Beacon (also near Dupont). Then, Tom and I visited the Newseum (a favorite for journalists), which was having a half-price promotion. (See the view from the Newseum's Pennsylvania Avenue Terrace at the top of this post.) We also stopped at the Portrait Gallery, where we made a mad dash around the building to try to find the Stephen Colbert portrait — only to discover it's no longer there. (I did, however, visit the third floor of the museum for the first time in my more than five visits there.) We stopped on the street in Chinatown to watch the outdoor trapeze classes for a few minutes, then visited Vapiano's for some pizza.
By the end of the weekend, everyone was exhausted and stuffed full of food.
