Close to home

With the execution of D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad on Tuesday, the media here (and perhaps everywhere) has been abuzz with sniper-related stories. In late 2002, Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo killed 10 people in the D.C. area.

When I arrived in Montgomery County in the summer of 2003 for an internship, the family I stayed with told me many of the attacks had occurred in the area. However, I never did any research to see exactly where they were.

Fast forward to 2009 when I'm living in Montgomery County and the attacks are back in the news. The more I hear, the more I wonder if I pass sniper attack sites every day. I saw multiple maps with one location pinpointed in northern D.C. and described as "just blocks from Montgomery County." I happen to live one block north of the D.C. border.

Today I finally found something that visually pinpoints the location of that attack (and the others). The slideshow with this Slate story photographs each location. The seventh pair of shots (at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Kalmia Road) is just a few blocks from my apartment. It makes me glad I wasn't living here then, as I would have probably been very frightened.
