Loads of journalists — and pricey shrimp

Friday night, I went to Journopalooza II, the second-annual event at the National Press Club. The event featured four bands (each with at least one member who is a journalist) and benefited charities. The first band was my journalist friend Alex's. (He's the drummer.) I had seen Charm Offensive before, and they played well yet again. I also saw part of the second band, Dirty Bomb, before heading out to Old Ebbitt Grill for some birthday drinks with a group of journalists. (One of them was celebrating his birthday.)

A couple people decided they wanted to order some shrimp, so they asked the bartender how many came in an order (instead of picking up a menu). The bartender said you could order as many jumbo shrimp as you wanted: 1, 2, 3 ... . So, they went with 18, thinking that would be a good amount for them and whoever else wanted a couple.

After ordering, someone was glancing at the menu and realized how much they cost: $2.50 each. I should mention that these shrimp were (with my permission) put on my tab at the bar. So, yes, that's $45 worth of shrimp. On the bright side, they were good (and large-sized). Were they worth $45? I'm not so sure. But the guys paid me for them, so I can't complain — just laugh.
