History in Herrin

One of my former co-workers from St. Louis enjoys looking up old news pages and stories. He sent me a link last week to the Time magazine archives. Specifically, he searched for my hometown of Herrin and found a number of interesting stories about it. Most of them are from the 1920s, when Williamson County was the site of the Herrin Massacre, Ku Klux Klan rallies and the Charlie Birger/Carl Shelton gang wars.

That was actually really neat to read those articles! It made me miss our Illinois History class! I want to go back and read about it some more! It is sad that our little tiny town of Herrin could actually be in Time Magazine that often and for such bad things!
