| Relaxing at Agra Fort. |

In Agra, we checked into our hotel, which even had a deck view of the Taj Mahal. Then we visited Agra Fort. It was obvious Agra was a touristy town because we were hounded constantly by salespeople. As we approached the fort, we had to dodge children sticking souvenirs in our faces. I quickly learned the word for no: naheen. I would end up using that about 10 times as much as I used hello (namaste). The fort was huge and gorgeous and had some great views of the Taj Mahal.

Pietra dura (semiprecious
stones inlaid in marble) is the
same technique used in the
Taj Mahal. |
Construction of the fort began in 1565, and it was transformed into a palace by Shah Jahan (who built the Taj). Shortly after the Taj was completed, Shah Jahan was overthrown by his son. His son imprisoned him in Agra Fort, where he could see but not visit the Taj.
While we were at the fort, we passed a group of Indian schoolchildren. When they saw us, they excitedly shouted out "hi!" A few boys even stopped to get their picture taken with us. We soon realized we would be celebrities pretty much anywhere simply because we were white.
